As scorching heat waves grip the world, with South Sudan already wilting under record highs of 45 degrees Celsius and Uganda feeling the burn too, a recent tree-planting event in Uganda offered a glimmer of hope. This wasn't just a celebration – it was a fightback.
The commemoration of International Day of Forests 2024 in Uganda took place at Forest Resort Park Buloba, bringing together various organizations such as Amber Solicitors and Advocates, The Kenneth Kakuru Tree Planting Initiative, Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) Uganda, Green Lens International, Greenwatch Uganda, and African Climate Reality Project. This event served not only as a celebration of 14 years of growth for Amber Solicitors and Advocates but also as a testament to the power of partnerships in promoting sustainability.
Forest Resort Park Director Douglas Lumu and his dedicated team played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the tree-planting event. They graciously provided the land for tree planting and offered extensive support to the participants, showcasing their commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement. Their efforts included digging pits and ensuring that all trees were properly watered, laying the groundwork for the trees' healthy growth. Director Lumu is also committed to overseeing the care of the trees until they reach maturity and can sustain themselves, aligning with Forest Resort Park's core values of environmental stewardship, as reflected in its name.
DTB Uganda, known for its commitment to environmental sustainability, set a shining example by generously donating 1500 trees for the event.
Their proactive approach didn't stop there; they also offered their staff from the sustainability department led by Mr. Casias Kajungu Musasira to actively participate in the tree planting activities, embodying their dedication to making a tangible impact on the environment. This gesture served as a beacon of inspiration, highlighting the importance of corporate responsibility and hands-on involvement in environmental initiatives.
The Kenneth Kakuru Tree Planting Initiative, founded in 2023 to honor the legacy of the late Honorable Justice Kenneth, organized the tree planting event on behalf of Amber Solicitors and Advocates. This initiative, deeply rooted in honoring environmental stewardship, embodies a commitment to preserving our natural resources.
Led by Mrs. Rose Kakuru Ikiriza Ngabo, the team actively participated in the tree planting activity, emphasizing the importance of continuity in environmental conservation and carrying forward the legacy of environmental champions like Kenneth Kakuru. Their presence served as a compelling reminder of the enduring impact of individuals dedicated to safeguarding our planet's future.
In the spirit of unity and environmental stewardship, Samantha Atukunda Kakuru Mwesigwa, Director at Greenwatch Uganda, lent her support to the tree planting activity organized by the Kenneth Kakuru Tree Planting Initiative. This collaboration holds special significance as Greenwatch Uganda was founded by the late Honorable Justice Kenneth Kakuru, establishing a profound connection between the organizations.
Ms. Atukunda's involvement exemplifies the shared commitment to environmental conservation and legacy preservation. Her participation underscores the importance of partnerships in driving impactful initiatives for a greener and more sustainable future.
The legal team from Amber Solicitors & Advocates, led by Alinda Ikanza, exemplified their commitment to sustainability by actively participating in the tree-planting activities. Their engagement demonstrated that corporate entities can play a pivotal role in environmental conservation efforts, beyond financial contributions.
Green Lens Uganda, led by Nelly Salvatore, ensured that the event was meticulously documented through captivating photography and videography, immortalizing the spirit of collaboration and environmental advocacy. Green Lens' visual storytelling skills ensure that every aspect of the project is well documented to help raise awareness about environmental conservation initiatives and inspire action for the betterment of our planet.
Adding to the vibrancy of the event, a team from the African Climate Reality Project, led by Dixion Bahandagira, joined in the celebration of International Day of Forests. Their presence highlighted the interconnectedness of environmental issues and the importance of global solidarity in tackling them.
As participants came together in four groups to plant trees, guided by Makerere University Forestry students who are also members of the International Forestry Students Association led by Theopista Abalo, the atmosphere was filled with joy and excitement. The students shared their expertise on tree planting principles, fostering a sense of empowerment and environmental stewardship among all attendees.
The day concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony, commemorating 14 years of growth for Amber Solicitors & Advocates and symbolizing the collective progress made towards environmental sustainability.
The event served as a powerful reminder that by fostering partnerships and taking tangible actions, we can make a meaningful difference in protecting our planet for future generations.
In a world where many corporate entities merely offer token gestures, DTB Uganda's proactive involvement in both donation and participation sets a commendable precedent. Their exemplary commitment to environmental stewardship serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for others to follow suit, demonstrating that by working together, we can create a more sustainable and resilient world.
