Clean Cooking in Uganda

What is Clean Cooking?

Clean cooking refers to the use of efficient, low-emission or zero-emission cooking technologies and fuels that reduce harmful pollutants, improve health, minimize environmental impacts, and save time and money.

 

These solutions prioritize energy efficiency, safety, and sustainability by using methods that lower indoor air pollution, conserve natural resources, and mitigate climate change. By reducing fuel consumption and cooking times, clean cooking technologies offer cost-effective and convenient alternatives that promote healthier living environments and protect the planet.

Promoting Clean Cooking solutions in Ugandan Communities

At Green Lens Uganda, we are dedicated to promoting clean cooking solutions that address the environmental, health, and economic challenges posed by inefficient cooking practices in Ugandan communities.

 

With nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide still relying on solid fuels like wood, charcoal, animal dung, and coal for daily cooking and heating, the need for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives has never been more urgent.

 

Our goal is to raise awareness and drive the adoption of clean cookstoves and low-emission fuels that reduce environmental degradation, improve health outcomes, and contribute to climate change mitigation.

The Environmental and Health Impact of Inefficient Cooking

In Uganda, like many developing countries, the over-reliance on wood and charcoal as primary fuel sources for cooking is a significant cause of deforestation, soil erosion, and air pollution.

 

These unsustainable practices lead to a host of environmental issues, including loss of biodiversity, desertification, and mudslides. The burning of solid fuels contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and black carbon, which exacerbate climate change and pose severe health risks, particularly for women and children who spend hours cooking indoors.

Clean Cooking Solutions

  • Improved biomass cookstoves that use less wood and charcoal and produce fewer emissions

  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) stoves, offering a cleaner alternative to charcoal and firewood

  • Electric Pressure Cookers (EPCs), which are energy-efficient and ideal for urban households

  • Solar cookers that harness renewable energy from the sun

  • Briquettes made from agricultural waste, providing a sustainable, low-emission fuel source

These advanced cookstoves and clean fuels can reduce black carbon emissions by 50-90%, playing a critical role in mitigating climate change and improving the quality of life for millions of Ugandans.

Raising Awareness Through Digital Content

As part of our mission, Green Lens Uganda creates engaging digital content to raise awareness about the benefits of clean cooking.

 

We support organizations like the Uganda National Alliance on Clean Cooking (UNACC) by producing high-quality videos, photos, and social media campaigns that highlight the importance of transitioning to clean cooking technologies.

 

Our digital storytelling brings the message of sustainability to the forefront, making it easier for communities to understand the long-term environmental and health benefits of adopting clean cooking solutions.

Exhibitions and Community Engagement

We believe that hands-on education is key to driving behavior change. Green Lens Uganda organizes clean cooking exhibitions in both urban and rural areas, showcasing a range of clean cooking technologies such as LPG, EPCs, and improved cookstoves.

These exhibitions allow local communities to experience the benefits of these technologies firsthand.

In addition, we collaborate with schools to educate children on the importance of clean cooking and environmental sustainability. We teach them how to make briquettes from waste materials, empowering the next generation with the knowledge to create a cleaner, greener future for Uganda.
